First of all: Give yourself a hand! Mother’s Day is a moment to celebrate all of the things moms do, seen and unseen and that starts by celebrating yourself. Whether it’s your first time celebrating Mother’s day or you already have your previous years ranked don’t forget to thank yourself for all of the work you do every day. So what to do with a day that’s all about you? We have a few ideas to get you started.
Indulge In A Big, Delicious, Breakfast
Mother’s Day is traditionally the busiest brunch day in the restaurant industry. So while it can seem more relaxing to outsource your morning meal, remember you’re going to be in a crowd. This year skip looking for parking, waiting in line and getting your kids food rushed out before the hanger kicks in and try a few simple at-home recipes you can send subtly to your partner for breakfast in bed or make together as a family. No shoes required.
Start a Memory Garden
A few days before mothers day go to your local nursery and pick out a few flowers you (and your kids, if they’re old enough) like. Set aside some time on Mother’s day to plant the flowers with your family. It’s a great way to get your kids involved and over the years you can look back at each section and remember the day.
Pamper Yourself
Growing up in my house the bathtub was a sacred space. Every other spot in the house was fair game to knock on a door but the words “I’m in the tub” was pretty much an out of office email reply.
A couple tips to make it even more spa-like:
- Ask your partner to put your towel and robe in the dryer for about fifteen minutes, that way you stay warm and cozy when you get out of the tub
- Try a quick-and-easy at home face scrub. Just blend together olive oil, lemon juice, sugar and lightly apply it to your face and neck using your fingertips in a circular motion. Rinse off after about 20 minutes.
- Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil on your washcloth and put the washcloth on your chest as you relax in the tub. The aroma of the oils will keep you relaxed and the warm washcloth will help to loosen your chest.
If this all seems like extra work on your day, skip it and just relax! I remember hearing an interview with Alicia Keys where she said she considers napping to be a form of meditation. I’m not here to argue with Alicia Keys, and I’m never here to argue against naps. Whatever you do this Mother’s Day make sure you take the time to thank yourself for the hard work you do, every day.
