One of the best things about summer is driving with the windows down and the music turned up. When you have little ones riding in the back seat, especially once they start picking up every new phrase they hear, it can be a challenge to find songs that are family friendly without driving you crazy. Here are a few songs we think are the right blend for summer 2018.
“No Excuses” by Meghan Trainor
Ms. Trainor really knows how to turn out a sassy, upbeat jam. Mixing some fun girl-power vibes and a catchy hook, four years out from her smash-hit “All About That Bass” she delivers another great song that will have the entire family dancing.
“The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey
Making a fun song about heartbreak is always a challenge, but producer Zedd seems to have found a way. Featuring country singer Maren Morris and musical duo Grey, this song is what happens when talented people from different artistic backgrounds come together to make a song that is both poignant and pop.
“Sit Next To Me” by Foster the People
Foster the People know how to make a song that makes you want to sit at the beach and just chill. They’re great at making low-key jams, which is maybe why their latest took a while to catch on, but don’t count out the bouncy beats and soothing synth here.
“Life Changes” by Thomas Rhett
Rhett has the kind of easy drawl that makes you forget he’s talking about some heady topics. Add in a beat that reminds you of early Bruno Mars beat, an uplifting background choir and a positive message this is just the kind of uplifting beat that’s perfect for a picnic in the park.
“One Kiss” by Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa
Calvin Harris is no stranger to making a beat that makes everyone want to bob their heads Night at the Roxbury style without feeling too dated. Dua Lupe’s vocals add just the right amount of insouciants to undercut Harris’s techno flair.
“The Champion” – by Carrie Underwood feat. Ludacris
Carrie Underwood has a powerhouse voice that’s undeniable and perfect for a classic anthem like this. Ludacris, always a welcome musical presence, adds a layer of urgency to this uplifting jam.
“High Horse” – by Kacey Musgraves
Kacey Musgraves new album “Golden Hour” has already gotten a lot of buzz, with some hits to follow, but for my money this song is the best on the album. It has the fun of Daft Punk’s danciest tracks paired with Musgraves vocal light touch.
“I’ll Wait For You” – by Nick Fradiani
I am a sucker for a sing-a-long choir chorus so, naturally, this song is right up my alley. It has an uplifting message, killer tempo, and Nick Fradiani’s voice is so soothing and inviting the song makes you want to swing in a hammock as the sun sets.
